Biden Bowl, Anyone? Meloni to Sell World Leaders' Gifts for Good Cause
Relinquishing unneeded offerings might be viewed as a little discourteous – except if it's done the right way.
A Philanthropic Clear-Out
The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction a reported 270 items bestowed upon her by world leaders on official trips. This unusual assortment could include items such as a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gilded heels.
The presents, collectively, are valued at around €800,000. They will be auctioned off to the highest bidder by a Rome-based art dealer. An exact timeline is yet to be set, although the intention is to conduct the sale by year's end, with all funds raised going to various charities.
Palazzo Chigi Collection
The presents reportedly locked away in a storage room on the upper level of the prime minister's official office. Sources state that Meloni additionally planning to auction off gifts given to her political forerunners that have been sitting unused indefinitely.
A complete inventory is yet to be officially released, but some insight emerged earlier this year when a detailed register of all declared gifts was submitted to lawmakers. The question focused on whether a legal value limit was being honored. Legally, a prime minister cannot take home presents worth more than €300.
An International Assortment of Presents
The collection includes:
- A silk accessory from the leader of Albania, allegedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A sari from Kerala from the Indian leader.
- A case of jewelry from the president of Slovakia.
- A fine china tea service and a selection of wines from the Hungarian prime minister.
- A ceramic bowl from the former US president.
- A electronic pad from the leader of Ukraine.
- Watercolour paintings from the Moldovan government.
- Additional objects including cosmetics, a skateboard, and several rugs received during trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Perhaps the oddest gifts included the Milei figurine and the blue python skin shoes," reports suggest.
Diplomatic Context
The prime minister has received praise, mostly from within her party, with winning over international counterparts and positioning Italy as a prominent force on the world stage once again.
The forthcoming sale represents a unconventional way to deal with the state presents that build up during a leader's tenure.
