Chicago's MLB Team Sign Japanese Slugger Munetaka Murakami on an Lucrative Two-Year Contract.

In a notable move for their retooling roster, the South Side team have signed infielder Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a two-year contract bringing in the high-profile player.

Deal Structure and Player Perks

The deal includes a substantial signing bonus, issued within 30 days, in addition to salaries of $16M for the next season and $17 million for the following year.

Importantly, Murakami's compensation is subject to escalators based on award achievements in 2026:

  • A seven-figure bonus for earning the league MVP award.
  • $500K for placing as runner-up or in third place in MVP voting.
  • $250,000 for ranking in the top ten.
  • An identical bonus for winning the Rookie of the Year honor.

His deal provides that he cannot be assigned to the minors without his consent and allows him to become a unrestricted player at the conclusion of the contract. Further benefits include a dedicated interpreter and flight reimbursement between the U.S. and Japan.

Posting Fee and Franchise History

As part of the signing, Chicago owes a transfer fee of $6,575,000 to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's professional league. The Yakult organization get a 15% cut of fifteen percent triggered salary escalators.

Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth Japanese-born to represent the Chicago franchise, following pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu previously coached Murakami back in Japan.

Player Profile

Murakami, a left-handed hitter who will turn 26 on February 2nd, joins a young lineup in Chicago that contains prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are coming off a difficult season, finishing at the bottom in the American League Central but showing a significant improvement from the previous campaign.

A two-time Central League MVP honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami is renowned for a monumental 2022 season where he belted 56 homers, eclipsing the single-season record for a player in Japan formerly held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the most youthful hitter ever to win Japan's coveted batting Triple Crown.

His most recent NPB campaign was curtailed to 56 games due to an side strain. Even with striking out often, he batted .273 with 22 homers and 47 driven in.

Over his eight-year tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has compiled a .270 career batting average with 246 home runs, 647 runs batted in, and 977 Ks in 892 games. Initially playing primarily at first base, he has since transitioned to third.

WBC Heroics

Murakami's heroics were on full display during the last World Baseball Classic. In the semi-final against Mexico, he drove in a game-ending two-base hit that brought home teammates for a come-from-behind 6-5 win. The very next day in the final against the United States, he hit a tying shot in the second inning, paving the way for Japan's 3-2 title triumph.

The lefty slugger is set to be officially presented at a media availability on the coming Monday.
