Russell Wilson Responds at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Quarterback Comments

New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson did not hold back on online platforms this week, responding to latest comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.

"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson stated via social media. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."

Wilson's response directly referenced the infamous bounty scandal controversy from 2009-11, when Payton led the Saints.

During that period, the league determined that the Saints had incentivized team members for delivering hard hits on rival teams. Consequently, Payton received a suspension from the NFL for a full year.

What Sparked the Latest Exchange

Wilson's response came after Payton delivered comments following the Broncos' historic 33-32 win over the New York. Payton suggested that the team had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.

Moreover, Payton hinted that he had informed team owner John Mara that he would prefer facing Wilson instead of Dart.

"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened well after our game,'" the coach stated.

Context of the Coach-QB Partnership

  • The quarterback joined the Broncos from the Seahawks in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245M contract.
  • The Broncos finished 4 wins and 11 losses in his first season prior to the team hired Payton, who was coming back to the sidelines after a period in TV commentary.
  • Payton benched Wilson 15 games into the 2023 campaign, a decision that ensured the player from getting injured.

If Wilson stayed on the roster by March 2024, his $37 million salary for the following year would have been locked in. Ultimately, Wilson was let go, marking the ugly split between the player and his mentor.
