Tragedy Occurs as Unintentional Detonation at Law Enforcement Facility in Kashmir Region Under Indian Control Results in Nine Fatalities
A tragic blast at a police station in Indian-administered Kashmir has resulted in the fatalities of nine people and wounding to thirty-two additional people, according to official statements.
The event happened when a cache of confiscated explosives inadvertently exploded during management operations.
Sequence of Events
The blast occurred on Friday evening at the Nowgam law enforcement facility, where explosive materials confiscated in Faridabad in the northern territory of Haryana province were being stored temporarily.
Local security director announced that the explosives were pending technical investigation when a "extremely tragic" mishap during handling led to their detonation at approximately 11:20 PM local.
Police Declarations
Law enforcement officials asserted that this was an "accidental detonation" and rather than a militant action. "Any other speculation regarding the origin of this event is unnecessary," highlighted the police chief during a press briefing.
The security post experienced extensive destruction from the detonation, with nearby constructions also being affected by the strong explosion.
Aftermath and Fatalities
Numerous cars were "engulfed in flames and turned into burned shells, with debris scattered across the area," according to police accounts.
"The intensity of the detonation was so powerful that some physical fragments were recovered from close-by residences, approximately 100-200 metres away the law enforcement facility," reported an police contact.
The majority of the casualties were security officials, along with forensic personnel, two investigative imaging experts, and a tailor who was with the team.

The territory's Lieutenant Governor stated commiserations and confirmed that an investigation had been directed into the tragic incident.
"I have directed a inquiry to determine the cause of the unintentional blast.
