What's Inside the Briefcase Henry Opens in the Hit Series?
For much of season 5 of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are imprisoned inside a mental fortress forged from the recollections of the villain Henry. The search for freedom in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to experience a life-altering moment from Henry's youth—a discovery that may just hold the secret to his downfall once and for all.

The Discovery in the Tunnel
After locating Max in the psychic realm called Camazotz, Max reveals she is sheltering in a grotto that Henry avoids at all costs. By leaving the lens cap on a viewing device found in Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the true terror lies outside of the cave. When she lines up her view with the shape, she and Max tumble into a abandoned tunnel.
They watch a young, eight-year-old Henry find an man who is hurt and scared. As the boy offers aid, the man reacts violently, wounding the boy in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly asks tearfully. The answer is affirmative, but the trauma involved more than a simple act of survival.

A Naval Mystery and Stolen Research
*The First Shadow* opens with the legendary naval test, which allegedly sent a warship into a realm later called the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who came back in a unresponsive state with an entirely new blood.
The captain's son, the future Dr. Brenner, attempted to recreate this phenomenon in remote Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker took experimental components to hand over to the Russian agents, who were keen to start their parallel research. That traitor in the mine shaft was that very thief.
Unlocking the Mystery
Given what is known about Brenner's work, the container most likely held samples of Captain Brenner's infected blood. In the scene, Henry is wounded and bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon handling the contents, causing the development of his psychic abilities—powers he would later pass on to the kids in Hawkins Lab.
Another possibility, the container could have held strange particles that later made its way to the Hawkins lab, where it maintains the stability of the mirror dimension. The stage play explains that Henry ended up in the Abyss, returning 12 hours later with a new blood type and personality. From then on, he battles the influence of a malevolent force, similar to how Will Byers was possessed by the shadow monster in the past.
Confronting Terror
The reason Henry avoids the cave linked to that memory shows how deeply scarring the event was for him. Even as he commands the collective consciousness and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him lingers. Vecna uses fear, and the narrative points to a showdown between the monster and Will, who has overcome his own deepest fears to become stronger.
This journey has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Crucially, Will now is aware of what the monster's own weakness, potentially giving him a decisive edge in the series finale that awaits.
