The damaged sculpture following the googly eyes were taken off.

The following day the alleged incident, the city leader said that repairs to the much-loved public artwork would be costly as the stickers were impossible to be removed without damaging the sculpture.

“This intentional vandalism to a valued community art is unacceptable and disrespectful,” City of Mount Gambier mayor said in mid-September. “It is not innocent amusement, it is costly - it is also disappointing to those people of our society who have embraced the Blue Blob.”

The mayor added the local government would pursue the “substantial” restoration expenses from those responsible for the vandalism.

Costing A$136,000 ($89,000; £68,000), the sculpture depicts a legendary giant animal, with the creators inspired by an ancient marsupial ant-eater discovered in local caves that was “massive, lumbering and fascinating”.
